We do not use the cheaper MDF (medium-density fiberboard) pool tables which are made of resin, wax, and particle wood that is compressed together. These cheaper MDF tables are used by many rental companies because they are cheaper to purchase and much lighter in weight so they’re easier to transport and deliver. The down side of renting MDF pool tables is that they warp after a few years due to the high humidity in Florida which causes the wood particles to swell. These imperfections causes the balls to not give a consistent ball roll in any direction. Composite tables are NOT tournament quality and most rental companies will not admit they are using these cheaper pool tables because they know most clients don’t know the difference. If the pool table weighs under 500 lbs it probably is not a true tournament pool table. Only pool tables made with slate (solid rock playfield), are tournament quality because the rock never warps, the only downside is slate rock is solid and very heavy. We only use slate pool tables for rentals because orlando arcade game rentals only provides the best in quality gaming rentals. Below is a comparison to help further explain the difference between the 2 types of pool tables.
MDF Playfield
MDF pool tables come with the benefit of being cheaper and lighter than slate bed tables, but at the cost of longevity and play quality. They will warp in humid environments (Florida), which will cause swelling or warping of the wood.
Slate Playfield
A slate bed is a piece of rock slate, up to an inch thick, originally extracted from the earth in a slate mine. The rock is then machined and cut into shape before being mechanically honed to create a perfectly flat surface. It is then fixed into the cabinet of the table and covered with a cloth. Because of how much slate weighs, the table itself has to be made of a stronger, higher quality material to support it than MDF.
Most pool purists will tell you there is a noticeable difference between playing on a slate table vs an MDF table. Slate tables tend to play faster and smoother, meaning that the balls roll across the felt effortlessly while MDF tables cause some amount of “drag”, which causes the cue ball and the object balls to travel less distance with the same amount of shot power.
